The Southern California city of Chino is in the western part of San Bernardino County. At the 2010 census, nearly 78,000 people lived in the city. With other areas of San Bernardino County and Riverside County, it is part of Southern California’s “Inland Empire.”
The first people to live in what is now Chino were the Tongva, who lived in a settlement called Wapijangna.
In 1841, under Mexican rule, Alta California Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted the 22,193-acre Rancho Santa Ana del Chino to Antonio Maria Lugo. Don Lugo turned management of the Rancho over to his son-in-law Isaac Williams who raised cattle on the land.
Even after California became part of the United States, heirs of Williams controlled the land until 1881 when it was purchased by Richard Gird, a miner from Tombstone, Arizona. He eventually owned 47,000 acres in the general region and founded the town site of Chino.
An economic depression destroyed Gird’s many plans, and the land was sold twice before 1900. A new syndicate of owners worked to incorporate Chino as a city in 1910. Still, the area remained mostly agricultural until after World War II. California’s fourth state prison, the California Institution for Men, was built in Chino in 1941. Later, the state opened the California Institution for Women in the country outside Chino (although it’s now officially within the city limits).
Today, Chino is a vibrant Southern California community that is home to a number of thriving industries, in addition to thousands of people who commute to other cities for work. Many residents of Chino enjoy riding motorcycles and bicycles for recreation and transportation. Unfortunately, sometimes these people are hurt in accidents caused by the negligence of others.
In such cases, Chino residents sometimes find that attorneys will not take their case because they don’t want the expense and trouble of traveling to San Bernardino County.
Fortunately, the attorneys at Injury Law Center want to help everyone who needs legal assistance. Unlike some other law firms, they will even travel to Chino to meet with people who need help.
