Moving your loved one from the original home to a nursing facility is not easy as many people think. There are a lot of things to sift through and several factors to consider. However, one thing that remains important is that your loved one needs a place where he can live a comfortable, happier and healthier life. Here are a few tips on how you can choose the best nursing home.

Determine the Needs of Your Loved One

Nursing homes provide a wide variety of services, meaning not all of them will provide the best care for your loved one. To avoid this, you need to clearly define and understand the needs of your loved one. Does he require specialized care? Does he have any disability? Is he on a special diet or suffering from a chronic illness? Knowing exactly the needs of your loved one will help you get a nursing home that suits him.

Ask for Recommendations

Once you determine the specific needs of your loved one, you can start looking for an ideal place. Begin with your friends and workmates. Ask them if they know any place they could recommend. Someone who had a positive experience with a particular nursing home will be more than willing to recommend them to you. Only ask those who have taken their loved ones to a nursing home. You can also ask the doctor who attends to your loved one for a recommendation to a facility he thinks offers excellent services.

Research Online

Most home care centers have a strong online presence. So, visit their websites and check them out. Look at the services they provide and the level of customer support they offer. Check to see how many hours they work in a day and whether they offer 24-hour emergency services. Visit online review platforms such as Angie’s List, Consumer Products or Better Business Bureau to see what other people are saying about them. A good nursing home should have positive reviews from past clients and at least a four-star rating.

Explore All Options Available

From your research, you need to come up with a list of three to five nursing homes you think best suit your loved one. These nursing homes should be located near your neighborhood. You don’t want to travel long distance every now and then to see your loved one.

Based on the needs of your loved one, options may include facilities that provide skilled nursing care, assisted living facilities or independent senior communities. If the option you choose is not located in your neighborhood, then consider facilities located within a commuting distance so that your loved one does not feel abandoned and lonely.

Consider the Staff

Remember, you are leaving your loved in the hands of people whose character you don’t know very well. You need to do a background search about them upfront before you make any commitment. Make sure the staff there are highly skilled and able to handle a wide variety of patient problems. Make sure they have zero criminal records and are able to work round the clock to provide quality care.

Apart from the staff, you need to check whether the nursing home has a valid operating license issued by the state government. A license shows that the company has met all the operational requirements and ethical standards as stipulated by the state laws.

Visit the Nursing Home

You need to conduct a preliminary visit to the nursing home to see for yourself where your loved one will be staying. Pay attention to the overall cleanliness of the place and make sure it meets the expected standards. Smell around to check if there are strong and offensive odors coming from the rooms. Consider what kinds of activities are provided and see if they suit your loved one.

Talk to Past Clients

Ask the nursing home to give you three people they have worked with in the past. Call these people and ask them about how they feel about the nursing home. Let them tell you whether the nursing home handled their loved ones according to their expectations. From this, you can know exactly what you are getting yourself into.
